A Typical Day at Nurture Outdoor Kindergarten

Most of our day is spent outdoors enjoying the endless possibilities for discovery and fun that the natural world offers. Recognising that children are competent and capable learners we have a child centred approach to all that we do, and so within an environment rich in natural, open-ended materials there is freedom to choose what to do and how to do it. All the while there is support from warm, mindful adults who know when to get involved and when to take a step back and observe the work as it unfolds. Each child’s opinions, preferences and dreams are listened to and taken seriously, and with this safe and secure foundation they are able to express and explore their own thoughts and ideas whilst absorbed in the serious business of play. Shared adventure with friends encourages negotiation, cooperation and working together, and development of language and communication skills. Opportunities to tackle challenges, make decisions and take risks allow confidence and independence to grow, and support the development of a happy, resilient, emotionally secure individual.

Being immersed in the natural world offers time, space, and endless possibilities for exploration, play and firsthand experience. It enables a love of learning to flourish. And when nurtured in this way an understanding of the self, others and the world can emerge.
